Shall We Dance - Peter Chelsom

February 9th, 2005

For the nth time, the Americans are doing a remake of popular foreign movies that were well received and earned accolades on their own. Now, based on the 1986 Japanese movie with the same name, the film by Peter Chelsom, after watching it, just leaves you feeling, uhm, just okay. Yeah, Jennifer Lopez (Paulina) is really a good dancer but in her attempt to be taken seriously, so seriously, that in half the time in this movie, she’s pretty stiff, and boring.

However, the movie have two highlights. Oh, I just loved el tango de Paulina. It was just so sensuous and passionate, the way tangos should be. And Stanley Tucci. I have watched him starring in other films: “The Terminal,” “Road to Perdition,” to name a few, but he was a revelation here. In his other films, he was the serious, don’t-fuck-with-me guy but here, he can really dance and really funny. If not for these two, you can just forget about the movie.
