CDO: New Limketkai

March 20th, 2005

Its good to be back here in Cagayan de Oro City since I was here last November. Yesterday was quite hot and sunny but now, it has been overcast and weather’s wet. Not so much has changed but the newly renovated Limketkai Mall, an institution in this city is making progress.

Cagayan de Oro has been considered as the fastest growing city in the country and much development has been going on in terms of infrastructure and opportunities in this northern Mindanao hub looks rosy. Henry Sy’s SM Mall has put up shop as well as the Gokongwei’s Robinsons. Limketkai, which is one of the pioneers in this city (the other is Gaisano) renovated its old and dilapidated commercial center into a behemoth, enclosed and airconditioned mall that is attracting again crowds and now offers different kinds of shops.

Entrance to the enclosed mall. A far cry from its original design that was open-air but old and dilapidated.

At the 2nd floor of the mall.

2nd floor, overlooking one of the wings of the mall.

The old Plaza Fair.

The underpass that connects the mall with Robinson’s Big R Supercenter.

Another mall across Limketkai.

I’ve seen how LKKS Mall has transformed from a bland, dilapidated open-air mall into one massive structure of fine shops and world-class entertainment. It’s pretty disappointing, though, that the mall’s design has remained bland and predictable. I somehow agree with Newi. Mura siya ug glorified XU Covered Court hehehe! But I’m nevertheless proud with the way things are shaping up in the once not-so-exciting commercial center. Sayang lang that not even SM can compete in terms of people traffic kay tua man sa bukid ang mall. Lisud kaayo e-compare ang duha. It would have been a tougher competition had it been located near LKKS. Pero choy na jud kaayo ang LKKS Mall. Comparable to Ayala Malls. Hey, I’ve heard Ayala is putting up one in the city? Nia naman gud ko sa Cebu, so I hardly hear the latest buzz there…One thing before I leave this forum, kindly inform LKKS’ marketing people to package LKKS Mall the way it should be. It can well compete with the finest malls in the country. Pwede ba ilisan sab tawn ang logo ug ang overall marketing pitch of the mall? The POP materials and the in-store decorations world-class pud unta. Sayang kaayo ang potential! =) I miss CDO…Ciao!

LImketkai center is still expanding and extensives renovations is still ongoing. There are even still large open spaces for expansion in the future. I wish the author would update this blog and put more pictures. Yes, Cagayan de Oro has been considered as the fastest growing city in the country. Just hope though that more bridges will be constructed, and more extensive road projects will be initiated to handle the increasing volume of traffic in the city.

Im a born Kagayanon now living in Manila. Limketkai is Cagayan de Oro’s pride. If I were to work for repackaging of Lim Ket Kai’s look, it would really be an honor and I hope they would consider looking for one.

Sayang lang… it could still be retouched. Limketkai’s branding don’t give a mark. Maybe it is because of the fonts used. It gives a very nostalgic look, nothing new. and the ceiling looks like a covered court…hinaut wala pa siya nahuman.
