Visited the new Columbia Sportswear Company store at the new Gateway Mall in Araneta Center, Cubao as well as the North Face store outlet at Shangri-la Mall, EDSA to buy some gear for the Smart Mountaineering Club climb this Saturday at Mt. Tapulao, Zambales. It has been quite a long time since I’ve done some climbing and I just have to gear up for the activity.
Columbia Panther Ridge
A waterproof, mid-cut hiker built for day hikes that may take you through mountain streams.
UPPER: Waterproof sanded suede and mesh. Gusseted tongue. MIDSOLE: Internal EVA with nylon shank. OUTSOLE: Non-marking Omni-Grip® rubber cupsole with lug tread pattern. Waterproof sanded suede and mesh. Non-marking Omni-Grip® rubber cupsole with lug tread pattern.
Preparation for a wet hike. I don’t have a climbing shoe, just my Nike ACG Air Zoom Orizaba Trail Running Shoe. Would have opted for the North Face but with price tags of P7T - P8T, its just too much.
Columbia Challenger convertible pants
This GRT (Gear for Rugged trekking and Travel) pants with wicking properties, zip-off legs convert pant to 7.5″ inseam short, security pocket in 100% Tactel® nylon Omni-Dry® nylon II and UPF30 (very good protection against ultraviolet).
Wearing outdoor short pants just won’t do considering that we’ll be climbing around 2000m high.
North Face EL Cap Shirt
Features: deep zip-front neck, flatlocked seams, lightweight, quick drying, raglan sleeves, relaxed fit, underarm gussets, VaporWick® (moves moisture and sweat away from the skin to the outer surface of the fabric where it can evaporate), versatile shirt for layering or all-around use.
I don’t have a long sleeved outdoor shirt and this one will surely serve it’s purpose for the heat below and cold at higher elevations.
North Face Class V Panel Hat
This cap just took my attention while put on display at the NorthFace store in Shangri-la Plaza Mall in Mandaluyong.
Features: brushed sweatband, durable, lightweight nylon fabric, fabric is treated with a DWR finish, floatable bill, quick drying, shockcord and stopper size adjustment. Protection from the sun.
KoveaDevil’s Eye head lamp
With 3 super bright white LED and High pressure Xenon bulbs that can be used as a spotlight at about 40m distance. Best to free one’s hand instead of carrying a flashlight. Its light and handy. Petzl, while the better brand, its just quite expensive. But hey, this Kovea (Korean) is cheaper and achieves the same purpose.
Kovea Blue Sky Mountain Stic
Three part mountain stick with shock absorption. I got this just as a precautionary measure to support myself if my left knee injury might recur as what I’ve experienced in two climbs before at Mt. Iraya, Batanes and an unamed peak in Bukidnon. That was just too painful going down.

Take this advice, “When you are in Rome, be a Roman”. Don’t set yourself aside and different from the rest or it can give different impressions in their point of view. Dress down, mix in. That is, if you are really interested to hang around with ethnic people…and unavoidably, not ethnic people with varied influences and orientations. The most ordinary and the most common with most people in those territories, the better. Things that are not to be noticed and would not get their attention. Better focus on establishing good rapport and sincere friendships. Empathy. Respect. Set aside differences. Do not impose whatever beliefs you have or any system you are used to. Marco Polo would not be the Marco Polo of today or the Laurence of Arabia if they did it any other way. It’s entering different territory, like entering another country. A different game to play. So, what’s common with those people? Malong. That’s one. Both men and women use that. Ethnic or non-ethnic. And serves many purpose.
