Cebu last week, 3
The new mall venue in Cebu: Banilad Town Center has been opened a few months ago and already, it has been attracting visitors and Cebuanos. What with new shops and restos that were only found in Metro Manila like Yellow Cab Pizza, Go Nuts Donuts, Gloria Jeans Coffee and others including an Apple store. Its supermarket is handled by Robinsons.

The newly opened Banilad Town Center has been getting excited and curious visitors trying out new shops and restaurants. Definitely the newest hangout venue in the city.

This new donut store has been deluged with customers in their Metro Manila outlets. Like the Dunkin Donuts craze before, many people from the provinces going home bring these donuts as pasalubongs. With its new store in Cebu, this will definitely be a big hit. I’m sure many outlets will be opened in the next few months.
Go Nuts Donuts products that have made people go loco.

Another store that piqued my curiousity: Alagym’s Fight Club. Probably named after the Edward Norton/Brad Pitt film starrer a few years ago, this is a pugilist’s paradise.

Cebu has changed much since the last time I was there. Funny, but I really didn’t want to go out of the hotel room because of the heat! I would have loved to visit Argao and Carcar again. And I miss Talisay’s lechon and chicharong bulaklak!

as i said, i still want to learn so much about how the country is working right now.
i can see how the malls do give A NUMBER of people jobs, but in that respect, i think the job production is merely an afterthought and not really the whole reason why these malls are being put up. yeah, it’s a good side effect but again, if the government or whoever is responsible for putting up these malls actually thought of how much social good they can provide with the money they invest in these malls, then i would bet that the malls we have now are not the most effective means to do so.
i am looking at the resources our country has and although i still yet have to find a comprehensive guide [or maybe i wont find one, i actually have to go there and do some field research], i don’t think the malls we have now are actually tapping into those resources our country has.
what i mean by distractions is not in the sense of “pampalipas oras” but more like something to appease the people - not me in particular since i don’t even enjoy malls- so as for them not to feel the blatant neglect of the government towards their conditions.

i guess both of you have a point there… But i beg to disagree. Bear in mind that these malls/corporations you are talking about are giving jobs to a lot of people. they maybe distractions to you but they are the bread and butter of those not so fortunate. And nowadays, having a job is a BASIC NEED for survival.

and that’s the thing. distractions from the hard life isn’t what the people need. solutions that actually address that hard life - with the goal of eradicating it - iyan ang kailangan. i’m not saying that everyone should constantly feel the burdens of day to day living pero i just feel like the government should be catering to the basic needs of the people. and not to the greed of corporations. again, i don’t know. there is much i need to learn about our country.
