Jim Paredes’ A.W.E.

December 15th, 2005

Jim Paredes, better known as one of the durable singers that comprise the Apo Hiking Society is also an accomplished photographer. Last 8 December, he opened his first one man photo exhibit at the Renaissance Gallery at the 4th Level of SM Megamall. While I was not able to go there last weekend, I was in Tarlac last Saturday and attended a photo workshop last Sunday, I was able to visit the gallery last Tuesday night.

Entitled A.W.E. for air, water and earth, these elements are the main themes of his photos that were taken since 2001 in various countries during their concert tours. Sizes are 16″x24″ (P10,000) and 20″ x 30″ (P15,000) in series of 10.

While the idea is not fresh, he does have wonderful photos. One that captured me most was “Death and Daing” (left). The composition and lighting is just great. However, I did notice that most of the photos have color noise. The one pictured at the right is good when viewed from afar but on close inspection, it is grainy with much color noise (I’m using a digital term here but I’m not just sure if this is a digital photograph) and some artefacts show. The rest, especially the flowers and views of a port were very sharp, detailed and perfect. The metallic sheen (printed on metallic paper) heightens the personality of the photograph.

The exhibit is until today but buyers can still check it out at the gallery.
