Lav Diaz’s Heremias and other movies
I just read in the Philippine Daily Inquirer that Lav Diaz’s movie Heremias won the Special Jury Prize at the 20th Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland. A feat considering that the judges were able to sit the entire 8 hour length! 8 hours, whew! That’s really long but his other movie, Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino clocked at 11 hours! Well, the noted director is known for his long non commercial films that are reaping raves and awards in major film festivals locally and internationally. Other than the two, Batang West Side runs around 5 hours.
I’ve been reading about his films time and again but unfortunately, I really haven’t watched any of his movies. Batang West Side was shown before in Cinemanila but I was still based in Davao during that time. I just hope that in upcoming film festivals here, some of his films will be screened.
And talking about movies…
North Country is currently screening with Charlize Theron in the lead and ably directed by Niki Caro who also megged the equally beautiful Whale Rider that I was able to watch during last year’s Cinemanila. It has earned two Oscars nominations: Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for Frances McDormand.
V for Vendetta starring Natalie Portman is on its second week and I really have to catch it in time before the next change program this Wednesday.
Ultraviolet with Milla Jovovich is another movie that I’m lining up as must see movies. Haven’t really read the reviews but I’m more into the special effects.
Rent, the movie version will be showing in Ayala cinemas only starting next week.
