Summer and Holy Week sched

March 30th, 2006

It’s really becoming hot outside. Surely, summer (as far as the Philippines is concerned, we consider March – May as summer) is at hand. One can just feel it. The intense heat. The almost always sunny days. Nights are equally hot too and woe if one doesn’t have an airconditioner. You’re craving for halohalo, ice cream or other cold drinks, Malls and department stores are starting to showcase beach wear and stuff. Talks of vacations, beach outings and Holy Week are the norm.

Holy Week. Less than two weeks from now and it will be Christendom’s widely anticipated event. Not only for one who is religious where visits to the church, penance and repentance are a must but for most, its an excuse to spend the holidays at the beach and do their penance there J.

Its less than two weeks and I still haven’t decided on where I should go to document Holy Week practices. Plane schedules are already full that’s why my original plans of going to Siquijor and later to Bohol were shelved. Bus? I was just informed by a friend that trips are also fully booked for the Holy Week that’s why I’m having second thoughts of going to Guiuan. That just leaves me with just being in Luzon. Will it be Vigan and other churches in Ilocos? Cagayan Valley? Laguna? Batangas? Quezon. Or Bulacan or Pampanga?

Well, I still have to decide on that. The remaining weekends will be spent going to places in Batangas and Pampanga to check these places out.

Sidney, its a dream but for now, there is just a race against time to document these churches before the hand of man eventually ruins these in the name of progress and modernity. Once, during a trip to Camalaniugan, Cagayan, I was aghast to arrive at the church that was eventually demolished since it was gutted with fire. To think that this place has the oldest church bell in Asia.

Regarding publishing, I just hope that a magazine will come out with one of those church “visita iglesia” as scheduled in April. :p

Well, let’s hope we meet in Lucban. Look for a tall caucasian guy with a camera ;-)

I think you should drop your calling card and your portefolio with Bookmark Publishers. They make wonderful books and I am sure you have enough material to contribute to one of their projects.
It is nice when your pictures are published and maybe you can even make some money.
A few days ago I purchased a book about Filipino Fiestas (out of print). A very interesting book alas the pictures are quite old.

Sidney, same with me. I’m also planning to document Pahiyas preparations especially the making of kiping and having this contact will make things easier.

I hope I can go to Lucban for the Pahiyas Festival.
It is always nice when you have an insider who knows the details of the activities. I missed already so many things because of bad or wrong information.
Where (place), when (exact time), what (what can you expect). It is a pitty that even the Departement of Tourism is not always able to give the full details.

Hello Sidney, thanx for the suggestions. I’ve already decided to go to Lucban and surrounding areas. I’ve already got a contact who knows intimate details of the Holy Week activities there :p

Will be awaiting your Holy Week photos though :p
