Movies seen lately

To ward off boredom, I was able to watch a couple of wonderful films that were screened here in Makati a few weeks ago.

March of the Penguins - Luc Jacquet, 2005

A very beautiful documentary movie that won in many prestigious international film festivals including the Oscars (Best Documentary, 2005). Its also wonderfully filmed in the harsh but stunning landscape that is the South Pole where drama and romance unfolds during the breeding season of the emperor penguins. Locally narrated by Sharon Cuneta, this is a must see film.

Monster House - Gil Kena, 2006

Other than the rather unusual concept not found in most full length animated movies, I was just taken in by the very adept animation. THe subtle expressions and movements are realistically captured.

Sarong Banggi - Emmanuel dela Cruz, 2006

I was first attracted to the poster of this indie film produced by UFO pictures and by the fact that it won for Jaclyn Jose the Best Actress in the latest Urian Awards coupled with the fact that its a Cinemalaya entry plus glowing reviews by well respected film directors, I just have to see this one.

Its not your usual movie. Its daring, kind of slow paced at first but then, the one night (sarong banggi direct translation from Bicol) stand story is something that will make you uncomfortable. But then, its a well made, coming of age movie that makes a painful realization to one of the characters.

Kubrador - Jeffrey Jeturian, 2006

Gina Pareno was just perfect for the role. No wonder that she and this film won in two notable international film festivals. Its also an inside look at jueteng, an illegal numbers game and how, even with the squalid conditions, Gina’s character shines.
