The spectacle that is Cutud

Mention Cutud and I just shake my head in disappointment. San Pedro Cutud in Pampanga has become a circus, a tourist trap that is becoming a yearly spectacle for those who want blood, gore and pretense rolled into one. Personally, I haven’t been to that place and I don’t think that I will ever go there to document the Lenten rituals. It has become commercialized, overly exposed offering cheap thrills for foreigners and gawkers alike.

There are still more Filipino tourists than foreigners there. By the way, why blame us?

Sidney, I never mentioned about number/ratio of locals and foreign tourists. Neither am I blaming anyone. I’m more saddened by the fact that Cutud has become more of a spectacle.

well, i understand your sentiment perfectly bai. at times, i wonder if the penitents just do their acts of contrition for the audience. it’s opposite what our good Lord said about not putting up a show of one’s righteousness before others. anyway, happy easter bai! looking forward to reading more of your entries. God bless!
