Transformers - Michael Bay, 2007

June 28th, 2007 | 2 Comments

transformers poster Opening in theatres today, we trooped for the first playtime and it was no surprise that majority of the moviegoers lining the ticketbox were males in their 20’s and early 30’s, some obviously skipped work (as a friend told me) just to catch it on its first day.

A visual and a highly testosterone treat that just made my jaws drop, awestruck with the latest digital cinematic effects and wizardry in this much awaited movie that is more on reliving bygone years when the original cartoon series played out in the boob tube. Now updated for the current generation, the Autobots and Decepticons are way just too cool, highly sophisticated in their recent incarnate forms. Coupled with the latest Dolby cinema sound system at Waltermart Makati, the cinema experience was highly heightened as you are enveloped with soundwaves and the reverberations inside the moviehouse made you feel that you’re part of the scene. Wow!

salagubang.net overhaul

June 27th, 2007 | 2 Comments

salagubangblog.jpg Salagubang.net is my first attempt at building a website and it was the reason why I bought a digital camera (Canon Powershot G5) in the first place. Now, I’m doing a major makeover. First, I added a blog to it so that I can post additional information about my beetles and Philippine Coleoptera in general that is so lacking in the gallery site. The blog is the perfect vehicle for this kind of info since it has permalinks, ping, rss feed and comments. Second, I am migrating the old pages entirely to Wordpress. I admit that its a bit daunting since it involves around hundreds of pages but I’m already starting it with a local install. Because of this makeover, I’m doing away with some of the parts like the feature, exchange and what’s new.

Blogging changes

June 25th, 2007 | No Comments

For quite sometime now, I’ve been mulling of doing various blogs with specific focus. Rough Groove (this blog) has been around for over 2 and a half years now but really, as a personal blog, the topics are quite varied, hodgepodge or whatever catches my fancy: movies, beetles, heritage, photography, food, travel, etc.

Binary Silver Just a few months after I started with this blog, I decided that I should have another dedicated solely as a photoblog. Thus, Binary Silver was born with the sole objective of showing photos on a daily basis. At first, I used Wordpress but later exported it to Pixelpost. After almost 800 photos later, I finally decided to make changes and thus Binary Silver was switched back to Wordpress considering that, with the current version, it is now more robust and addresses my needs. It is my plan to make it more than just a photoblog and posts relating to photography should go in there, not to this blog anymore. It now has its own domain name: www.binarysilver.com

Bestsellers Bookstore

June 22nd, 2007 | 1 Comment

bestseller.jpg I visited the new bookstore at Robinsons Galleria, Bestsellers which is another subsidiary of National Bookstore. Just opened last March, I got curious about this when I read about it in the Philippine Daily Inquirer last weekend. When I arrived there, I was at first impressed with its design: good and friendly colors of orange and white with bits of gray, well arranged rows of books organized by genre and well lighted. As what I always do when I visit bookstores, I checked out the Filipiniana, Computer, Photography and Graphic Design sections and guess what? I was quite disappointed. Such a few selection of books. I was expecting a more varied title but what I found were the usual books and really not comprehensive enough.

If I were to shop for books, I would still prefer the Fully Booked branch at Rockwell that has the widest selection of Photography as well as Graphic Design titles or even at Powerbooks in Greenbelt, nevermind if I haven’t seen any new titles but their selections are still plenty compared to Bestsellers.

Another crappy MMFF this year

June 20th, 2007 | 2 Comments

Brace for another crappy Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) offering this December. After the much ballyhoed best picture results last year, it seems, nothing will ever change. As per Bayani Fernando, commercial viability will still have the biggest percentage at 50%, the rest of the criteria will have to divide the remaining half.

As for the titles in the first batch that made it? Hold your seats:
