Series 48: Cebu on my mind

I miss Cebu. A little more than a month since I was last there and I just have this strange longing for home. Is it because Makati is just too crowded and hot and noisy that I miss the relative peace of being back in my home province? Or is it just that I miss my family? Or traveling down south rounding off the western side and marvel at the clear blue waters and ancient churches and watchtowers dotting the coast? Or being spoiled with Talisay lechon that I always want to be served during Sunday lunch accompanied with dugo-dugo and crispy ginabot and fruits or hot pan de leche at night smothered with a good helping of butter and savor its fluffy texture?

Series 48: Cebu on my mind is now starting at Binary Silver. Consisting of 8 photos, these are images of Cebu near the Mactan bridge area that makes me smile as I’m welcomed back when I arrive from Manila or lingers in my mind whenever I leave again.

The new TriNoma mall

trinoma.jpg The TriNoma (Triangle North of Manila), another of the Ayala’s mall ventures, the newest mall in Metro Manila was a curiosity to me that’s why last Sunday, we intentionally went there to check it out for ourselves. Located just beside the MRT North Edsa station and just across the street from SM North Edsa, the behemoth of a building from the outside proved to be a disappointment inside. Once you go in, you immediately feel the tight spaces within the mall. The floor height is just too low that I just felt claustrophobic. It lacks the airiness of the the other Ayala malls like that in Glorietta or the Ayala Center in Cebu. The activity center seems just too small, dwarfed by those massive columns that dominate the center. Some sections are just dimly lit. Even if these areas still has to be filled out with stores, the way the lights are fixed along the hallways are just not bright enough.

simbahan.net

simbahan blog I’ve always been fascinated with the colonial period and heritage churches of the country and even before doing the Facades book project for San Agustin Museum, which, by the way, will be launched this 30 August during the International Book Fair, I have already traveled and started documentation work on the existing old churches. Alarmed by the current condition, seeming neglect and lack of sense of history by most people wherein such structures are being demolished, renovated to the point of losing its charm and identity, and thus our heritage, I’ve been planning of making a site dedicated on Philippine heritage churches and other related structures like colonial era cemeteries, forts, watchtowers and convents.

Simbahan is this site wherein I will be featuring these structures in order for people to know the rich built patrimony that we have but sadly, slowly losing. There is a need to know what we have and what we have lost so that we will know what will be preserved and/or restored. Such lofty ambitions but I think with this attempt, I can make a difference. As of now, it’s more of a blog but I will add more information into it and come up with a content managment system (CMS)-type of site using Wordpress. Like salagubang.net, for the meantime, posts are once a week.
