SUBSCRIBECataloging RAW photo files
I’ve been busy the past few days copying my RAW photo files into a portable drive in order to catalog and organize these into a system that is searchable so that finding photos would be easy instead of going over lots and lots of DVD discs. And if you’re going to handle more than 100 x 4.7Gb of data (my files almost breaks the 500Gb level –> with photos that I’ve taken since 2003), its no easy task.
The whole business of cataloging photos becomes easier with Adobe’s Lightroom. If it happens that I will own a Mac, I would still prefer this one compared with Apple’s Aperture software. Other than a much affordable price, its much better, as what I have read.
Now, the whole task of organizing like copying from DVD to a newly purchased Seagate FreeAgent 500Gb into Lightroom and keywording stands before me.

Ayus ah! I was contemplating on buying that FreeAgent as well pero it’s too big to bring around so I bought a Lacie instead for the portability. I tried Lightroom and it’s a very good organizer nga, you can add tags and all. Pag OC ka kelangan mo i tag lahat ng pics haha.
I’m very OC with back-ups as well. I try to have backups in multiple places ara sigurado rin.

I still do dvd backups para sure. I need the 500Gb hard drive so that it would be fast and easy to search as well as convert images using lightroom. if cash would not be a problem, i will make a backup of the hard drive.

It is definitely a big problem. Will you trust your external hard drive completely or will you still copy on DVDs?
I started storing my new pictures in an external drive but I have the feeling I should also store them on DVDs. If something would happen to my hard drive my whole “Philippine” adventures might be lost forever!

naku bai, tell me about it. i was a point and shooter way back 2004-05 and my archive then could fit into 1-2 dv discs. now, i’m more than halfway sa 500 gig external hard drive ko, what with 10 megapixel images. grabe!
