langyaw.com - sojourns of a solitary traveler

October 29th, 2007 | No Comments

langyaw.jpg Langyaw is Cebuano for an outsider, a foreigner in a local place. It also means a visitor, or more, a traveler.

Travel is a passion. There’s something in the act of going places, experiencing the varied sights, scents and tastes that I don’t want to miss. To travel is not only getting from point A to point B but it is a journey to ones’ self.

langyaw - sojourns of a solitary traveler is a blog dedicated to this very exciting endeavor very close to my heart. All pertinent posts will be filed here instead of in Rough Groove except for some instances from time to time.

Series 52: La Naval de Manila

October 25th, 2007 | No Comments

lanaval_blog.jpg A new series is starting at Binary Silver on the recently concluded La Naval de Manila celebrations that marked the centenary of the canonical coronation of the image of the Nuestra Senora del Rosario - La Naval de Manila. Consisting of 22 photos, it covers the reenactment as well as the procession on 4 and 14 October.

The series is also available as a multimedia slideshow at my portfolio site while an accompanying post in simbahan.net gives a historical background on this much observed tradition.

This is also featured at Pinoycentric.

4 other movies that I’ve watched in Pelikula

October 19th, 2007 | No Comments

After posting about the movies that I’ve watched in the recently concluded Pelikula Pelikula 6th Spanish Film Festival, I was able to attend the screening of 4 more films:

7virgenes.jpg derechodefamilia.jpg

7 virgenes - Alberto Rodriguez, 2005 (Spain). The title actually refers to a ritual belief that if one gathers seven different images of the Virgin Mary, lights a candle and count to 60 while facing a mirror, a vision of how one will die will appear after the count which came true with the main character’s best friend. Other than that, its a wonderful coming of age film about experiencing the rough but exciting life of a teenage delinquent, reflecting on his life and making choices for his future.

Derecho de familia - Daniel Burman, 2006 (Argentina). Another good film that fathers and their sons should watch: the oftentimes difficult relationships between the two, understanding each other and of learning to be a father to his children.

fuego.jpg vendran.jpg

Iluminados por el fuego - Tristan Bauer, 2005 (Argentina). In our life, sometimes we need to visit the past to heal old wounds and come to closure. This is a film about the experiences of three young friends during the Falklands war between Argentina and Great Britain and how that experience has haunted each other, well, the two friends who survived, well into their life a few decades later. Its another wonderful Argentine film that are unlike other war films.

Otros dias vendran - Eduard Cortes, 2005 (Spain). Life, love and sex in the age of the internet where a 40ish teacher has been chatting her way to find these things but oftentimes leads to disappointments and disasters until she meets a man that is the answer to her dreams. But a strange twist of fate plays that either will break or make their love. An interesting film, I should say, that deals with, again, choices that one just has to make for life and love.

Unfortunately, I missed La vida secreta de las palabras - Isabel Coixet, 2005 (Spain) which was voted Audience Choice.
