Pelikula Pelikula still ongoing at Greenbelt

October 9th, 2007

Pelikula Pelikula the 6th Spanish Film Festival is now on its second week at a theater in Greenbelt 3. There are still 18 good quality films that in one way or another have been nominated or won an award/s at film festivals in Spain, Latin Americo or in major festivals abroad.

Since Tuesday last week I was already able to view 7 films that were really great, thought provoking and wonderful, a change from the usual milieu:

utopia el aura

Utopia – Maria Ripoll, 2003 (Spain). Its a beautiful movie that focuses on a person’s ability to see the future, fate and making your own destiny despite what one sees will happen beyond the present.

El aura – Fabian Bielinsky, 2005 (Spain, Argentina, France). After so many times of planning the perfect heist and one day gets the chance to really get into the middle of one, what will you do? Will it still be as perfect as you planned it to be?

el proximo oriente Azuloscurocasinegro

El proximo Oriente – Fernando Colomo, 2006 (Spain). It’s no question that Spain today is multicultural and this film is a good and a comedic look when different cultures and religions collide.

Azuloscurocasinegro – Daniel Sanchez Arevalo, 2006 (Spain). Another wonderful movie about making decisions and the many choices that one has to face to make one’s dreams come true.

la noche de los girasoles los ultimos de filipinas

La noche de los girasoles – Jorge Sanchez-Cabezudo, 2006 (Spain). I just love the way this film is told. Events are narrated from the perspective of the different characters that are really interconnected.

Los ultimos de Filipinas – Antonio Roman, 1948 (Spain). This film is about the Siege of Baler during the last days of Spanish colonization in the country when a group of Spanish soldiers held it out in the church of Baler, Aurora refusing to surrender even when the country was already ceded to the United States. Its actually a propaganda film during the Franco era and filmed in the Mediterranean. There is only one screening of this film.
