December 10th, 2007

desap_blog.jpg In celebration of World Human Rights Day today, a new series is started at Binary Silver: Series 53: Hizarsa, coping with a desaparecido. This is about the family of Cris Hizarsa and her family coming to grips with the forced disappearance of her husband Abner.

Both parents are members of progressive groups and over the course of their 28 years of marriage has, time and again, been harassed and detained by the military. With the repeal of the anti-subversion law and breakthroughs in negotiations between the left and the governement, Both parents were able to go back mainstream. In the last 7 years, it was only the time that they have been together as a family.

At noon of 22 March 07, Shara, the youngest daughter was waiting for her father at school for her baon (lunch). She waited in vain but he never came. A few meters from the school, her packed lunch was left still hot on the seat of a padyak (local pedicab). Abner was nowhere in sight. Since then, the family has no news about their father. A major witness unfortunately died because of old age. The legal processes has yet to move. Yet, Cris and her children are hopeful that one day, their beloved father will come back home.

This series is part of Projekt Desap: Surfacing, a photo project on the lives of the families of Desaparecidos.
