Do you really need a promise ring?

l8011 Promise rings, in modern understanding, is considered by many to be a recent development, popularized in the 1990s by groups advocating sexual abstinence in the United States. Also known as purity or chastity rings and usually with a cross design which signify their Christian affiliation, the wearer pledges to refrain from having sex until marriage or until it can be replaced with a wedding ring.

These are typically sold to adolescents or to parents who are expected to give these as gifts to their adolescent children. However, it’s effectivity as a deterent to pre-marital sex is still up for debate and this practice has raised criticisms from various sectors especially when these groups were able to get some government funding.

Is this really something new? In a more broader scope, the use of promise rings has its roots in the Rainessance period, starting in the 16th century. If a man cannot afford to get married, this ring is given as his pledge until such time that he is ready. This should also be differentiated from the friendship ring wherein there is no commitment to marry.

In most instances, the giving of promise rings between two people signifies their commitment to lifelong love and devotion to each other and can be a prelude to marriage.

It’s golden, platinum, cheap metal, glass, plain plastic, or even a twine. There’s even a more hi-tech version, bone. It can be adorned with the most priciest diamond sitting at the center or a conglomeration of other stones and gems. It is worn as a celebration, a mark of unity, or status.

Across history and cultures, from time immemorial to the present, rings worn around one’s fingers have been celebrated in literature, painting, film, oral accounts and tradition from nobility to the pauper. Even the superhero the Green Lantern get’s to use his power via his ring.

A quick look at the forms and uses of rings and one can be astounded at the variety. It is not only as the more popular engagement or wedding ring but for other purposes as well. There’s the class ring, used to commemorate a student’s graduation. Eternity rings symbolize eternal commitment to a partner. The promise ring represents a promise not to court another one. Rosary rings are indented bands that can be used as a handy rosary.

There’s also some fancy and not so known forms like the mood ring which changes color depending on the body’s temperature thus signifying a change of mood. The signet ring has a coat of arms on it’s face that can be used to seal wax on a document or a letter.

At a low point

Affairs of the heart? Not really the best time now. Its quite complicated especially if the other person would just judge you outright. Harder still if that person would just shut the door and would not listen. I want, no, I need to talk to someone. But I don’t have someone to talk to.
